Silk Lantern: 4 Seasons
Final project for Weaving and Textiles I. Assignment was to create an object that shows at least three techniques learned during the year. Skills shown in this project include wet felting, silk painting, hand sewing, and wrapping. The premise for the design is a lantern with false stained glass sides. Each of the sides marks one of the four seasons and shows the image of a folk or fantasy creature. This lantern is made from painted silk hand stitched onto a wooden frame. The top, bottom, and side supports are wrapped and bound in black yarn. The lantern's lid is secured to the main frame using loops of red cord. This allows the top to be removed to access the flameless candles, which are suspended in the center using black cord and candle holders made from wooden dowels. 'Miniature lanterns' made from black beads, felt balls, and embroidery thread are hung on the lid as accents.
